The EU sees “convergence” with Japan on how it looks at generative artificial intelligence, or AI, Reuters reporetd citing Vera Jourova, Vice-President for Values and Transparency, European Commission.
“I see a lot of convergence in how we look at AI and generative AI,” said Jourova, the report added.
The EU has previously pushed for tougher while Japan has looked at more easier approach than the EU to strengthen economic growth. However, both regions have been deepening cooperation over technology like semiconductors and AI.
“I was recently in China and it’s a totally different thing. I could discuss with our Japanese partners because we do not have to explain to each other basic, basic things,” Jourova said on the sidelines of a forum on internet governance in Kyoto.
The Group of Seven industrial powers are talking about guidelines for generative AI under a process set up in Hiroshima, according to the report.
Discussions are on track to start consultations on a framework for AI, however a code of conduct for companies involved in AI requires additional work, Jourova noted as per the report.
Governments worldwide are mulling how to mitigate the risks of emerging AI technology, which can reshape economies and the global security arena.
The U.N. Security Council held its first formal meeting in July to discuss risks of security and misinformation with the use of AI. In same month, July, several tech giants, including Amazon (AMZN), Google’s parent Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) made voluntary commitments to the White House to implement certain measures for the safe use of AI.
Gloablly, companies have launched their own large language models, or LLMs, which can provide services such as content and image generation, to name a few. Google’s Bard, Baidu’s (BIDU) Ernie Bot, Alibaba’s (BABA) Tongyi Qianwen and Tongyi Wanxiang, OpenAI’s upcoming text-to-image AI tool DALL·E 3, Meta Platforms’ (META) AudioCraft, SeamlessM4T, and Llama 2, and Getty Images’ (GETY) model called Generative AI by Getty Images, are some of them.
