Bell Media, the media unit of BCE Inc (NYSE:BCE), said on Friday that it was immediately pausing its advertisements on Meta Platform’s (META) Facebook and Instagram.
“Like many Canadians, we are concerned about the consequences Meta’s decision to block links from Canadian news organizations will have on Canadians…,” said Bell Media president, Wade Oosterman, in a statement.
In late June, Meta had said that it planned to end access to news on Facebook and Instagram for its users in Canada, in response to the country’s Online News Act.
Canada’s Online News Act requires online platforms to negotiate deals in which they would pay Canadian publishers for their news.
